Portsmouth Criterium

Each September, downtown Portsmouth and the Market Square area are transformed into a cycler's paradise - a speed cycler that is. The Portsmouth Criterium is an annual short-track speed cycling event that features some of the country's top men and women pro-racers, located less than one (1) mile from our Portsmouth hotel.

Thousands of spectators are drawn to Portsmouth's downtown district to marvel at the speed of the pro-racers, partake in the community challenge, cheer on their children in various kids' competitions, or simply enjoy the day with friends and family at the various activities throughout the area. Additionally, spectators and locals alike are invited to the Lifestyle Expo to discuss with local vendors and organizations on healthy lifestyles, various area outdoor recreational activities, and even a rock climbing wall.

In addition to the professional races, a local fan favorite has become the various children's competitions. The youth races begin with children as young as four, racing 600 meters in two classes - one with, and one without training wheels. Children aged between 7-9 race one lap around the pro-circuit's 0.6 mile course; while children 10-12 race two laps around the course. The top three boys and the top three girls in each division receive a medal, with all participants receiving a celebratory ribbon.
