Each December 31st, as one year fades into the next, the streets of downtown Portsmouth come alive with local families and visitors from afar. Often under a soft blanket of freshly fallen snow, Portsmouth First Night® celebrates the ringing in of the New Year with music, dance, fireworks and ice sculptures. First Night® revives the ancient traditions of marking the passage of time in a present day meaning. Initially taking place in Boston in 1976 to conclude the city's bicentennial events, the alternative to traditional New Year's Eve revelry brings together neighboring communities to celebrate the New Year in a relaxed and joyous celebration.
Portsmouth became a First Night® community in 1986 and is actually one of two remaining towns in the state of New Hampshire that commemorate the end of the year with the celebration. The festivities for First Night® Portsmouth 2013 kick off at 4pm on December 31st and will conclude just after midnight.
