Friday May 10th is the annual Portsmouth Hit the Decks celebration and the official kickoff to the summer season on the seacoast. The event is the brainchild of John Akar, co-owner of Cava Tapas and Wine Bar, and is promoted through the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce. John came up with ideas to create a more festival-type format around the opening of the decks, to bring the community together and make it a celebration of the upcoming summer season.
This event continues to grow and this year there will be more than 60 participating businesses that will be offering special deals to celebrate the beginning of the summer season. Our restaurant, Harbor’s Edge will be offering Fish & Chips along with a Craft Beer Special for $12. Cava is offering glasses of sangria for $6 all night long! The Oar House will offer a free cup of chowder with any food purchase, and the Portsmouth Gas Light will offer half price chicken fingers and buckets from open to close.
Over the years the event has evolved to include more than just restaurants and decks and local businesses such as the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company, The Music Hall and Tugboat Alley are included, and this year Atlantic Parking is offering free valet parking on this day at their Bow Street valet stand.
It's going to be a fun day and night, and a wonderful time to visit Portsmouth. Everyone is ready to get out, be by the water, enjoy some sunshine, and gather with friends.
