April 1, 2013
Twenty-five years: I never imagined that I would look at back a quarter-century and think, “wow, that went by quickly.” The Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside opened on April 4, 1988. I was the director of sales and marketing and knew I had the best job of my career. There are so many team members I remember with joy who have made this a most wonderful adventure and experience, none more so than late founder and owner Steve Griswold.
Steve never wavered from his vision of the role of the hotel in the community, its place as anchor in the city's northern tier, and he never lost sight of the history in our community, particularly in our neighborhood. He frequently referred to the hotel as the ‘place where memories are made’, reflecting all the life milestones that occur within our doors…from birthday celebrations, engagements and weddings to bereavements, and all that falls in between. That he is not with us as we celebrate this milestone is tragic. He relished opportunities to reflect and refocus, and this anniversary is clearly one of those moments.
In memory of Steve Griswold, the hotel is hosting a Be The Match Registry* marrow donor drive on April 4th. Be The Match Registry services patients in need of a marrow transplant who do not have a matching donor in their family. These patients need to find a matching unrelated donor who is willing to donate stem cells on their behalf. Be The Match Registry helps 10,000 patients a year suffering from leukemia, lymphoma and a variety of other bone marrow functioning diseases that require a marrow transplant from an unrelated donor.
Our drive will occur on the anniversary of our opening April 4, between 2:30 and 7 p.m. at the hotel. We hope the community will come join our hotel family as we remember Steve, and bring new registrants together with Be The Match. Potential donors ages 18-44 are particularly sought for the registry- this has proved to be the age group with the most successful transplant results- but all are invited to come to the drive. Cash donations to Be The Match* may be made as well, in memory of Steve.
Chef Garth Lyndes, who was also with us on opening day 25 years ago, has some treats in store for drive attendees on this very special occasion. Hope to see you at the Sheraton April 4th,
