This week, we asked Matt Blasik of The Ledges Golf Club to be our guest blogger.  Read what Matt has to say about golf at The Ledges this summer and fall:

The Ledges has five sets of tees ranging from 6,981 to 5,000 yards and is widely known as the finest public golf experience on the seacoast.  The fair but challenging layout gives players of all abilities the opportunity to hit every club in the bag.  Those who frequent the Ledges know their work isn't done once they reach the green.  The Ledges consistently has first rate putting surfaces that have challenged tour players and wekeend warriors alike!

“Our guests, and consumers in general, are starting to understand that the complexity and flavors available in beer are deep and wide-ranging.  Sheraton Portsmouth is truly the only craft beer destination hotel in the area – it’s a great place to stay and experience great craft beer.  We love beer, and we love our community.  We will continue to support and nurture the partnerships we’ve developed with so many of the local breweries including Smuttynose Brewing Co. and our close neighbors, Earth Eagle Brewings.   Bringing Brian on board with us will only help to further spread the passion for great beer and the great experiences we can provide for all visitors to the Seacoast area.”   - Robert Cartwright, GM

Friday May 10th is the annual Portsmouth Hit the Decks celebration and the official kickoff to the summer season on the seacoast. The event is the brainchild of John Akar, co-owner of Cava Tapas and Wine Bar, and is promoted through the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce.  John came up with ideas to create a more festival-type format around the opening of the decks, to bring the community together and make it a celebration of the upcoming summer season.

Remembering 25 Years

Hotels in the downtown were a new experience. At the time, the only hotels in Portsmouth were located on the traffic circle. Guests coming to Portsmouth were traveling through for the first time and learning how much this small city had to offer.

The end of the eighties brought styles of peach and sea foam green, beige and fake flower arrangements. It was the age of hard keys for guest rooms, folio paper with perforated edges—and certainly no Internet. There were only four floors at the time, and the Sheraton warm welcome was in full swing with bellstaff in British-style outfits, looking like the royal guard. The front desk staff had no fancy titles like “guest service agent,” and staffing levels were at all-time highs. The front doors were opened by hand, the lobby music was classical and guests arriving still looked up in awe when they saw the grand staircase, embodying elegance and style.

In memory of Steve Griswold, the hotel is hosting a Be The Match Registry* marrow donor drive on April 4th, between 2:30 and 7 p.m.  We hope the community will come join our hotel family as we remember Steve, and bring new registrants together with Be The Match.  Be The Match Registry services patients in need of a marrow transplant who do not have a matching donor in their family.  These patients need to find a matching unrelated donor who is willing to donate stem cells on their behalf.  Be The Match Registry  helps 10,000 patients a year suffering from leukemia, lymphoma and a variety of other bone marrow functioning diseases that require a marrow transplant from an unrelated donor.
